Have You Heard Of The "NO-TOUCH" Technique in Breast Augmentation Surgery?

If you had been actively researching about breast augmentation , you probably would have heard of the Keller Funnel (and similar breast funnels example the Kim Funnel, BiFunnel etc). If you haven't, worry not; we will let you know what they are, what they’re used for, and the advantages and disadvantages of using them.

A Keller Funnel is a device used by some surgeons for breast augmentation procedures that is designed for enhanced efficiency during breast implant placement.

I have been using the Keller Funnel in almost all of my implant breast augmentation surgeries. The funnel is in my opinion an incredible creation in enhancing breast augmentation surgery technique. The use of the funnel is proven to significantly reduce the rate of reoperations due to capsular contracture.

Contrast this with insertion of implant without a funnel

Steps in using a Keller Funnel:

  1. Trim the funnel
  2. Lubricate  the inside of the funnel with antibiotic solution, rendering the inner surface slippery
  3. Insert the implant into the funnel
  4. Propel the implant into the breast pocket

Breast Augmentation Using The Keller Funnel

Advantages of the Keller Funnel

Advantages of using the Keller Funnel include:

  • Reduction in risk of infection
It offers a true “no touch” technique for insertion of breast implants. This minimizes contact with the implant in an attempt to reduce the risk for contamination.
  • Shorter incision length
  • Less trauma to the implant during insertion.
It minimizes the risk of gel fracture (this decreases the risk for rippling) and minimizes the risk of tearing the implant.
  • Easier for the surgeon to insert the implant
  • Shortens the overall surgery time

Disadvantages of the Keller Funnel

There is really no patient disadvantage to using a Keller Funnel but it does add to the overall cost of the surgery making the surgery more expensive.

The second generation Keller Funnel has been redesigned with a clear polymeric vinyl material that is more slippery as the implant passes through it.  This is especially helpful with textured implants as their surface creates more friction between the implant and the funnel.

Interested in the breast augmentation surgery and wonder if the Funnel would be used in your procedure?

Buyer's Regret After Breast Augmentation Surgery ?

BREAST AUGMENTATION SURGERY (IMPLANTS)

Breast augmentation has been steadily rising in demand worldwide. The majority of breast augmentation patients are absolutely thrilled with their results and have zero regrets—nonetheless, during the recovery period, many patients wonder if they signed up for what they wanted.

(WEEK 1)

Anesthesia can cause nausea and vomiting in some patients, and you may lose your appetite for a few days. Pain medication (analgesics), as well as a reduction in physical activity level can lead to constipation. Bloating and fatigue are also normal after-effects. Typically this lasts for a few days and is nothing to be alarmed about.

It takes time for the breast tissues, muscles and skin to adjust to your implants; until these tissues have healed sufficiently, you can expect to feel some tightness in the chest area, especially if your implants are placed under the muscle or in a dual plane fashion (half under the gland and half under the chest muscle). Postoperative swelling, which peaks about 5 days after surgery, will amplify feelings of chest pressure.

BUYER'S REGRET

During the first few weeks after surgery, one breast may seem bigger than the other ,and one may appear to drop lower than the other. You may even wonder if your surgeon has made an error—chances are the answer is no, and your breasts just need more time to heal. These are all normal occurrences after breast augmentation.

If one were to ask a breast augmentation patient if she’s happy she did it, and you’ll most likely hear, “YES! But there was a period of time in the beginning….” It is easy to forget that recovery has an emotional component, too. Hence, it is actually common for patients to go through a brief period of mild depression after any surgery, breast augmentation included.

The important thing here is to be patient; post-op blues almost always pass after a few weeks, when you’ve returned to your normal routine, post-op swelling and stiffness has subsided, and you’re noticing that your breasts look better every day.

WORRIED THAT YOUR BREASTS LOOK UNNATURALLY HIGH AFTER SURGERY?

Initially, your new breasts will probably appear unnaturally high on the chest and may have a stark “torpedo” shape. It takes time for the breasts to “drop and fluff” or settle into their final position and for scars to fade.

In fact, as a surgeon; I would be worried if the breast implants look near perfect on the operating table. It would be prudent to place them slightly higher to account for the "drop and fluff" that ensues post surgery.

Your body will require time to adjust to your implants; post-op swelling can also contribute to asymmetry, as swelling might go down earlier in one breast than the other. Typically, the 3-month mark is when your breasts will be pretty close to their final shape and appearance, although scars will continue to fade for several more months.

After 12-months, the implants would have "dropped and fluff" and all residual swelling would be subsided giving a natural feeling and appearance. The caveat here is to understand the natural time frame evolution post breast augmentation surgery.
