If you had been actively researching about breast augmentation , you probably would have heard of the Keller Funnel (and similar breast funnels example the Kim Funnel, BiFunnel etc). If you haven't, worry not; we will let you know what they are, what they’re used for, and the advantages and disadvantages of using them.
A Keller Funnel is a device used by some surgeons for breast augmentation procedures that is designed for enhanced efficiency during breast implant placement.
I have been using the Keller Funnel in almost all of my implant breast augmentation surgeries. The funnel is in my opinion an incredible creation in enhancing breast augmentation surgery technique. The use of the funnel is proven to significantly reduce the rate of reoperations due to capsular contracture.

Steps in using a Keller Funnel:
- Trim the funnel
- Lubricate the inside of the funnel with antibiotic solution, rendering the inner surface slippery
- Insert the implant into the funnel
- Propel the implant into the breast pocket
Advantages of the Keller Funnel
Advantages of using the Keller Funnel include:
- Reduction in risk of infection
It offers a true “no touch” technique for insertion of breast implants. This minimizes contact with the implant in an attempt to reduce the risk for contamination.
- Shorter incision length
- Less trauma to the implant during insertion.
It minimizes the risk of gel fracture (this decreases the risk for rippling) and minimizes the risk of tearing the implant.
- Easier for the surgeon to insert the implant
- Shortens the overall surgery time
Disadvantages of the Keller Funnel
There is really no patient disadvantage to using a Keller Funnel but it does add to the overall cost of the surgery making the surgery more expensive.
The second generation Keller Funnel has been redesigned with a clear polymeric vinyl material that is more slippery as the implant passes through it. This is especially helpful with textured implants as their surface creates more friction between the implant and the funnel.
Interested in the breast augmentation surgery and wonder if the Funnel would be used in your procedure?
